Bridgewater worried deer hunt total will not reach 2003 mark

The hunters killed 23 deer in Bridgewater this past weekend. However, Mayor Flannery notes that a number of those were pregnant, “so the number is higher.”

The deer remain a hazard to drivers in New Jersey, and so I hope the hunt continues. (A little known fact is that deer had been eliminated in New Jersey by the start of the 20th century—a similar fate of the buffalo out west. The deer you see today are mostly the progeny of a handful that were brought into the northwest corner for a hunt, sometime in the early 1900’s.)
