How I look at it, is the South is not America. It’s just one region of a much larger country.

And Bush and the Republicans have basically been running the government for the benefit of the South (very wealthy folks all over, yes, but basically for the South).

So inevitably in electorial college politics, you have all the states outside the South banding together to elect a candidate.

This is generally what happened in the post-Civil War period. the “solid South” was pure Democrat, and the rest of the country was Republican. Only when the Democrats were able to break through the north or west, did you get a Democrat president. (Like Grover Cleveland, Woodrow Wilson, FDR). Otherwise, the rest of the country did not want to hear from the South.
