I was up particularly early for this event, and had a great view once the sun rose over the Watchungs.
10 x 50 binoculars, with the proper filter, was enough to do the job.
The shame is, I think there are more people today who would have liked to have seen the transit, than actually saw it.
NASA does a lousy job of marketing certain science. Almost as bad as some of its other, well, you know . . .
