Today’s republicans are not compassionate.

It’s hardly “compassionate conservatism”. The phrase was dug out of the G.O.P. archives to appeal to moderate Republican women.

I have a hard time seeing how taxing the Northeast dry, to fund great programs and special rebate checks for the South, is “compassionate”.

Back in the day, the Republicans stood for balanced budgets and governmental thrift. That’s why people in the North and Midwest voted for them. Now they are the party of white Southerners, taking money from the North, attracting their share of Jimmy Swaggert, Jerry Falwell types. Dubious about civil rights. And running big big deficits.

In short, wasn’t this what the Democratic Party used to be 60 years ago?
