Do I have to join the Japanese pension system? An update!

Democratic Party of Japan Manifesto (English)

It’s Item 18 on page 28 of the plan.

– A unified system to which every one subscribes

– A minimum pension of 70,000 yen. So probably similar to the American system where original contributions count for more.

– A “passbook” with a record of contributions. In the States, you get an annual notice.

So pension coverage (and pension payments) as a part of being here in Japan is coming. You can listen to the Japan Probe BBS pension-dodger crowd or whichever. But I’m telling you, paying in is going to be part of things for foreigners here, just like it is everywhere else in the modern world.
