I remember this one when 92 WXTU Philadelphia was playing it regularly in their short “new wave” format. I think it was early 1983.
The song is a classic of pop. But the reason the group became a one-hit wonder, I feel, is because they caught the cusp between disco and rap.
Some commentary says that the group was inspired by Chic, which is definitely high disco era. But it sounds like they have the Sugar Hill Gang and even a bit of Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey in there, too.
Plus Roto Rooter.
