It’s been a few weeks since I’ve had anything to report on the Temple Japan “Who pays the rent?” topic/project. I did get a very nice “cc” on a letter by my State Representative to either the outgoing or incoming Pennsylvania education secretary, asking his intervention in answering my question.
This is not really a Temple Japan blog. Everyday readers know this; but I think some people think I’m the Wikileaks for Temple Japan and I’m not. I just want to know whether the numbers that appear in the Annual Financials of Temple University main campus, concerning Temple Japan (shown as “TESS”), are inclusive of all the costs, or just most of the costs. I think the rent is being carried as a net on the balance sheet, which means Temple Japan has actually been losing a ton of money in the past 30 years.
To this budgetary end, the main page of Temple Japan has a little revision. Previously, under “Faculty and Staff” was quite a retinue of administrators and functionaries (for a school that really enrolls about 1,200 students, not 3,000.) This week, that list has shrunk considerably.
Here is the old link, as a Google cache and as PDF: Faculty and Staff Temple Japan
Now, you can look at the new link, here.
Wha . . . . ? Where did all the administrators go?
What used to be a list that looked like 20 or so, now (March 5, 2011) is 7, including the dean. Pretty remarkable, if, in fact, there has been a downsizing—and not simply that the same people are around, except now “off site”. Off web site, that is.
For the life of me, I couldn’t figure out how a branch campus that gets charged $1,000,000 a year by the Main Campus for overhead, still needed a retinue. It kind-of looked like Kirk Patterson’s club, although the current dean (Patterson’s buddy) seemed to be doing his share of staff hiring of the well-connected in 2009.
I’ll leave it up to the crowdsource (sourcecrowd?) on this topic to tell me if, in fact, there has been a right-sizing. If so, it’s about time, but it’s coming late.
It will be interesting to hear what the controller has to say when someone from the Corbett Administration finally gets down to the bottom of:
“Who pays the rent?”
[Update: Apparently, no shakeup. A number of names were taken off the website, but are still at Temple Japan. Very tricky.]
