As an update to perhaps my most popular post ever, I want to let people know that the government is reopening open enrollment for select tax filers that were hit with the 2014 “shared responsibility fee”. That is the surtax for being able to use the emergency room when you don’t have insurance, basically.
The special enrollment period starts March 15 and goes through April 30. What I found in this tax season, is that Health Sherpa, which claims to have helped unroll 120,000 people (I believe it), is really the fastest way to get into Healthcare.gov. I directed a number of my clients through there, and if they chose Highmark here in Pennsylvania, they usually got an invoice from the insurer in a matter of days.
In Pennsylvania, 471,000 people are now estimated to have Marketplace policies. That is easily 3% of the population. Another 3% to 4% will benefit from Medicaid Expansion, which Governor Wolf just made much easier to apply for.
