Six-fold jump in Americans giving up passports? Probably not.

Bloomberg has a template piece that shows up every couple years.

As you may know, Americans who give up their citizenship are listed—or rather, supposed to be listed—in the Federal Register. This is to let the rest of us know what is up.

The authors are expecting you to believe that Treasury is actually getting their duty right. The reality is that State (which issues and cancels the passports) somehow never gets around to sending the names over to Treasury.

So as this logjam fluctuates, the names that do appear in the Federal Register also fluctuates.

Then, someone writes an article saying there is a trend. But it’s not a trend.

In fact, all the names aren’t even there.
