Kuchikomi: How companies in Japan force employees to quit.

An entry that caught my eye over the weekend, here.

For Japan-side readers, you obviously know why the company who is looking to downsize chooses to go through these long-running theatrics (and psychological abuse). To American readers, though, the reason might not be clear:

There is no “at will” employment in Japan. An employee obtains a right in a job, and a right to a job.

There are only rare instances (like corporate bankruptcy) that changes that iron rule of Japanese labor law.
